Well in my view there are several reasons most of them historical
- Dedworth is older than Windsor.
- Dedworth is a ward within the Parish of Bray
- Both Dedworth & Windsor are mentioned in the Domesday Book,
an inventory/census of England carried out on behalf of the
Normans after the conquest in 1066AD, however the Windsor
mentioned is in fact Old Windsor which lays to the East of the
present day Windsor. New Windsor did not exist until after the
famous castle was built., in the 1100’s
- West Windsor is a term used by the occupants of a private
housing estate to separate themselves from a large council
estate within Dedworth. However West Windsor Residents
Association was formed to provide a united voice for complaints
against the builders of these houses.
- Before this estate was built the term West Windsor related
to the area of Windsor to the West of the town centre, before
reaching Dedworth.
- Dedworth appears on local road signs, West Windsor does not.
- According to local legend Dedworth was where the last wolf
in the vast Windsor Forest was killed, hence the street name
“Wolf Lane”, in Dedworth, and the public house the Maypole,
which was once named “The Wolf”.
